The Issue: Improperly Installed Basement Bathroom
Plumbing
The homeowner contacted us due to ongoing drainage issues and a non-functioning toilet in their basement bathroom. The shower and plumbing had been installed years earlier by an unlicensed handyman. While the bathroom looked finished, the plumbing underneath the concrete was not installed to code.
After inspection, we found:
● Shower drain piping not pitched correctly
● No proper venting for the shower
● Pipes installed too shallow under the concrete
● No backflow protection for basement fixtures
● A toilet that did not operate properly due to incorrect plumbing
These issues led to slow drainage, sewer water problems, and unreliable bathroom
performance.
Why Proper Drain Pitch, Venting & Backflow Protection
Matter
Plumbing code requires:
● Drainage piping pitched at ¼ inch per foot
● Every plumbing fixture to be properly vented
● Backwater (backflow) protection for fixtures located below the nearest city manhole
Without these, basement bathrooms are at high risk for backups, sewer gas issues, and
ongoing plumbing failures. Because the piping was buried under concrete and installed
incorrectly from the start, the only proper fix was a full plumbing rebuild.
Scope of Work: Full Basement Bathroom Rebuild
To correct the issues and complete the remodel, our licensed plumbers:
● Removed and demoed the existing shower enclosure and shower valve
● Worked with the framer to reframe the shower walls
● Busted up the bathroom concrete floor
● Tied into the existing sewer line
● Installed new 2-inch shower drainage piping pitched at ¼ inch per foot
● Installed a code-required backwater valve for basement fixtures
● Replumbed and adjusted the toilet location
● Furnished and installed a new Gerber Viper toilet
● Installed a new vanity and new faucet
● Installed all new shutoff valves and water supply lines
● Completed plumbing rough-in and final installation to meet Minnesota plumbing code
New Shower With Bench in a Compact Space
The homeowner also wanted a new shower with a built-in bench but wasn’t sure it was
possible in a four-foot shower footprint. We confirmed it was, sourced the appropriate
materials, and installed a functional, comfortable shower without sacrificing space.

The Result: A Code-Compliant, Long-Term Solution
This project wasn’t a patch or temporary fix — it was a complete, permanent plumbing
solution.
The homeowner now has:
● Proper drainage and venting
● Backflow protection against sewer backups
● A fully functioning toilet and bathroom
● A modern shower with a built-in bench
● New fixtures, shutoffs, and water lines
● Plumbing installed correctly and built to last
