We recently completed a plumbing service call for a homeowner in North Minneapolis who
contacted us for two issues: a leaking bathroom faucet and no hot water in the home.
Once on site, we tested their water and found it measured 6 grains of hardness. In Minneapolis, average hardness runs 6–8 grains and anything over 5 grains is considered hard water. Even moderate hardness causes mineral scale buildup inside water heaters and plumbing fixtures over time.
Minneapolis water comes from the Mississippi River and is treated with chlorine and chloramines. EPA allows up to 4 parts per million (ppm). Minneapolis typically tests between 2.8 and 3.6 ppm, which is high compared to many cities. Chlorine dries out rubber seals, damages internal components, contributes to scaling, and causes taste and odor issues.

The proper solution is a whole-home carbon filtration system using activated carbon, the same technology used in refrigerator filters and reverse-osmosis drinking systems, removing chlorine and chloramines before water enters the home.
The water heater inspection revealed loud popping from heavy sediment buildup caused by lack of flushing and maintenance.
Typical lifespans: Tank water heaters: 10–12 years Tankless water heaters: 15–25 years
